The lines and curves as expressions on a saree

The lines and curves as expressions on a saree
Beautiful artwork on the saree - Lines and Curves

I was attending a seminar on Becoming Future Ready at my daughter's school, when one of the panellists spoke about exploring different choices before finalizing on one. He spoke about meandering off the straight line, exploring and experiencing different things to find the one thing that you love to do for the rest of your life.

And that is how, the concept of lines and curves came into my mind. In Geometry we are taught that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. But what if we were adventurous and wanted to explore and experience different options before deciding on one. What if instead of a straight line we chose to take a little detour and go in a curve to experience life - sounds interesting? Yes, maybe a little terrifying because we are moving out of our comfort zone but exciting, nevertheless.

This was the concept that I chose for designing our saree collection titled "Lines & Curves". The idea was to showcase how one can choose to follow either a straight path or wander a little from the straight path and discover something new that is equally satisfying and enjoyable.

The lines and curves are represented by the vines and the leaves are the different experiences that you may have along the way

It was challenging to create this thought on a saree, but we tried to, nonetheless. We hand embroidered the straight lines and curves. Crochet applique flowers were used to mark the other new destinations that one can reach by following one's intuition.

Sharing some images of how we worked this concept on the saree - The lines and curves are represented by the stems and the destinations by crochet applique flowers. Since the saree here was a lighter shade of yellow with a bright pink selvedge, we decided to work with colors that highlighted the central theme and complemented each other. The hand block print of paisleys in pink in the background depicts your thoughts as you traverse the landscape.

We decided to keep the embroidery simple and minimalistic. The lines and curves were embroidered in Stem Stitch and the experiences (or the leaves) in Oyster Stitch. Colors used were Dark Pink, Yellow, Maroon, Brown, Green and Orange. The crochet flowers were done in rani pink.

The Color Palette: Yellow denotes Hope, Green denotes Growth, Pink denotes Nostalgia and Orange denotes Optimism and Energy

Why did we use flowers as destinations - flowers represent beauty, vividness, joy and vibrance. Our destinations had to be the same - joyful and exhilarating.
