Appliqué is ornamental needlework in which pieces of fabric in different shapes and patterns are sewn or stuck onto a larger piece to form a picture or pattern. It is similar to collage of pictures with the difference that here you are mixing patterns and fusing shapes to create compositions. A number of stitches are used for applique work - the most common ones used are buttonhole stitch, bakhiya, running stitch etc. The idea is to give a rustic look and feel to the garment - adding an old world charm.
